The bar-headed goose is a migrant that breeds in colonies of thousands in Central Asia and arrives in India, as far south as Tamil Nadu for the winter.  It is pale grey and has distinct black bars on its head. Its call is the usual honking of geese as they fly overhead.  They typically feed on fish but are also known to forage for grains in fields.  The most distinct fact about this bird is that it flies over the tallest peaks of the Himalayas at very high altitudes to arrive in India.  The bar-headed goose is one of the world’s highest-flying birds, even having been observed to fly over Mt. Everest.
