Featured animal:  Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris)

Location:  Tadoba National Park.

This painting is of the very famous mother daughter duo of Maya (sitting), the mother and Meera (standing), the daughter.  It was taken by Ms. Shruti Dudhane at the lake in Tadoba Andheri Tiger Reserve (TATR).  Maya is a very successful female tiger, having to her credit many litters that she has raised to adulthood.  Young adult tigers have to move out and make their own territory, although some will fight and take over their mother’s territory.

The basic social unit of the tiger is the elemental one of female and her offspring. Adult animals congregate only temporarily when special conditions permit, such as plenty supply of food. Otherwise, they lead solitary lives, hunting individually. Resident adults of either sex maintain home ranges.
