Horned puffins are water birds, feeding by diving for fish. They are extremely agile and aerodynamic under water and excellent in fishing. To achieve flight, horned puffins either jump off cliffs to gain momentum, or race across the water to reach speeds required for flight. They live among steep rooky slopes and cliffs and nest in colonies. Unlike other puffins, they dig little or no burrows, preferring rock crevices for home and shelter. The horned puffin walks upright, gripping rock surfaces with its claws, and climbs cliffs with ease. These birds are commonly seen during cruises in the sounds and open seas of Alaska.
